A Guide to the Bahamas
Grand Bahama
The Bahamas were first discovered by Christopher Columus and lie just 50 miles from the coast of Florida. This
group of 700 islands is a blend of tropical palm trees, pristine white sandy beaches drenched in sunlight and
multi-coloured coral reefs.
The Bahamas are a firm favourite with tourists who are spoiled for choice with the many activities on offer;
watersports, scuba diving, fishing, golf, kayaking through the mangrove swamps and swimming with dolphins to name
just a few.
Grand Bahama Island is the second most popular tourist destination and has one of the oldest underwater cave
systems, situated in the Lucayan National Park, which is a major attraction for scuba divers from all over the
world. Nassau, capital city of The Bahamas, resides on New Providence Island and is home to ancient forts, elegant,
noble architecture and fine local and international crafts and goods. With an abundance of hotels, casinos, cabaret
shows and cruise ship docks Nassau is a vibrant centre of entertainment and commerce.
Bahamian culture is a mix of African and European influences and music is in their blood whether its calypso or
a marching band. The Bahamians are laid back, humorous, helpful people who love to celebrate and who take great
pride in their rich culture and history.
