Alternative Rural locations to Explore in Spain

When it comes to Spanish holidays there are names that you hear again and again: resorts in the Costa Blanca, or city breaks in Barcelona. But while these can be good options, there’s a lot more to see and do in Spain than just the tourist hot spots. You’ll find that if you look hard enough there are some fantastic hidden gems. Whether you’re looking for a bit of history and culture, or just like a good ramble, it makes sense to get off the beaten track a bit.
Burgos Province is a beautiful part of the Spanish countryside. But it’s also somewhere that can offer an amazing glimpse into our past. There have been numerous human fossil finds in the town of Atapuerca, and in fact the oldest human remains in Europe were recently found in its hills. You can also wander to the town of Ags to take part in the great caf culture. In fact once you’ve tried the coffee here you’re likely to find that you’re spoilt for coffee everywhere else.
For hundred of years pilgrims have travelled through the Navarra Region, and as such you’ll find there’s still lots of cheap accommodation on offer for people passing through today. The town of Puenta La Reina is one of the must-see parts of the region. It has a beautiful bridge and lots of traditional shops to look around. Wander out even further from the more modern bits of the region and you’ll find Cirauqi. This town has miles of Roman road still in tact, and a Roman bridge too. It’s in the middle of nowhere, but has lots of facilities to cater for the traveller, so you don’t need to feel like you’re roughing it to go back in time.
Astorga in Leon Province takes you again to somewhere that has a lot of history. The Gaudi-desigined Bishop’s Palace is stunning, and there are further Roman ruins. It’s also somewhere where you can indulge yourself, with too many chocolate shops to choose between, and even a brilliant little museum of chocolate. What more could you want after a good walk in the countryside?
It’s amazing what you find if you head away from the tourist hotspots in Spain. It really is a country to take your breath away.
