Mosaics have made their mark on various buildings over the years, thousands of years would be more accurate. They are essentially patterns made up of ceramics or glass which have seen a number of forms through its previous incarnations. It is believed to have originated from Greece although there were previous forms which existed beforehand. Mosaic art, however, does have some very unique qualities.

It is commonly thought that the Orient is responsible for being the first influence of mosaic art. One example, the Childean society, in 2000 BC, set small cones in a surface of columns as a form of decoration. Fused glass were discovered by the Egyptians who again used it as decoration. They went as far as decorating its ships with it, such was its popularity. This form of decoration proceeded to be popular around the world.

In Greece, pebbles were worn down in water and crafted out mosaics. They were set in pictures to produce designs and shades which conveyed a realistic look. Lead was also utilised in the creation of these mosaics, used to define and highlight lines. These could be appreciated on floors as a form of decoration, covering the entire floor. Not only did it make it more aesthetic but it also increased its functionality.

In the 4th century BC,The Romans has taken what the Greeks has accomplished and made their own mark on it with small pieces of stone and glass which provided them with the ability to produce more detailed mosaics. They were even applied on walkways where they were made from both marble and stones.

The Byzantines were next in line to take the mosaic baton and take it even further. They produced some of the finest mosaic art during this time, demonstrating an enormous amount of skill and application. They also produced in large volume. When the Byzantium collapsed in the 15th century, mosaics fell in popularity and were not seen again until the 19th century came around. Since then, it has continued to exist in a variety of forms and can still be appreciated today.
